What is conveyancing? Let Alliance Conveyancing Guide You

What is conveyancing?

Conveyancing is the legal process of transferring the ownership of a property from one person to another. And if you are buying, it is also the process of making sure that you get what you think you are buying – a comprehensive check. If you are selling, likewise, it is the process of complying with all of your obligations to satisfy the buyer, your Bank, and ensuring that you sell effectively.

If you want to buy or sell a home, land or investment property you’ll have to sign a contract. The legal work involved in preparing the sales contract, mortgage and other related documents, is called conveyancing.

How long does conveyancing take?

The standard settlement period is around 4 – 6 weeks after contracts have been exchanged. The contracts generally contain standard Law Society-approved conditions, and also some extra conditions, applicable to your specific case, to give you extra protection.

Contract terms, as well as price, will be negotiated by the buyer or seller prior to signing the contract.

Can I do conveyancing myself?

Can I do conveyancing myself?

It is possible, but it certainly isn’t recommended. We understand that when you’re spending so much money buying or selling a property, you might be looking for ways to save money elsewhere. However, a small mistake could end up costing you thousands of dollars.

Also, like the duck calmly on the pond, there’s lots going on under the surface. You need to use an experienced conveyancing representative who knows what to look for.

If you do it yourself, and for instance, take longer, or give the other side some basis to make a claim against you for something you promise or do in a letter, then any saving will have been gone, many times over. It’s just not worth the risk!
